There was something about this image that captivated my attention when I saw it on e-Bay. I imagined a young schoolboy—confident, yet innocent. He looks to be about 11 or 12 years old. This Ambrotype dates to the late 1850’s so my hunch is the lad was born about 1846-7—a bit too young to serve in the Civil War though not impossible, particularly in the late stages of the war. He wears a tie more typical of young men than of young boys.
The image is a Sixth Plate (2.75 x 3.25) in a half case.
