Another daguerreotype from my collection. Mid-1850’s pious woman holding Holy Bible. A Sixth Plate (silver plated copper from the SCOVILLE bros.). Several scratches on her that I did my best to remove.

Another Sixth-plate daguerreotype from my collection. Unlike most other dags I own, this one was pretty severely scratched by someone trying to clean it but I purchased it anyway since she was identified & did what I could to save the image. I left the scratches at the bottom of the image which will give you some notion of the effort required to preserve the image. This lady’s name was Mary Elizabeth Holbert (1828-1892), the daughter of Jesse Holbert (1803-1849) and Maria Reid Whitman (1802-1871) of Chester, Orange county, NY. This dag was taken sometime after her marriage to George Frederick Andrews (1828-1914). The couple were married in January 1851. Image on an L.B. Binsse & Co., N. Y. silver plate.
The Circuit Rider & Helpmeet
Another daguerreotype in my collection. This one of Rev. James Sayre Griffing & his wife Augusta. An 1852 graduate of Wesleyan University, Rev. Griffing was the first Methodist Circuit Rider appointed by the church to preach the gospel in the Kansas-Nebraska Territory when it opened for settlement in 1854. He lived through the Bleeding Kansas days and shouldered his rifle with other Kansas civilians to turn back Gen. Price at the border in the 1864 Battle of Westport.
